This documentary film records UMN SWAC soil scientist, Kyungsoo Yoo, visiting Jindo, an island in South Korea, for a decade, interacting and empathizing with the people. Jindo is known for its cultural traditions that predate the Confucian influence on the country. The islanders considered it an ethical human act to return the dead to the soil, whether they were friends or enemies.
Just as soils are integral to the earth’s life-supporting functions, humans participate in the cycle through death. The people of Jindo joyfully celebrate this human destiny while recognizing the challenges of preserving traditions, as well as the difficulty of feeding people without harming the ecology.
