Biography
Dr. Heidi Roop is a national expert in climate science and adaptation. She is the Director of the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership, a nation-leading applied research and Extension program offering cutting-edge climate science and tailored resilience resources and technical assistance. The Climate Adaptation Partnership has become a model for similar university-based climate services programs across the country. From 2024-2025, Roop served two presidential administrations as the Assistant Director of Climate Services in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. During this time, she also served as both a Deputy Director for Services and Acting Executive Director of the U.S. Global Change Research Program. In these roles, she played a leadership role in coordinating global change research and services across the over fourteen federal agencies and advised the White House on how to effectively manage emerging and anticipated climate risks through improved federal climate services.
Roop’s interdisciplinary research focuses broadly on the effective integration of climate information in decision-making at a range of scales—from community resilience planning to international negotiations. Her research has taken her around the world, from Antarctica to the shores of Lake Superior. She is the author of The Climate Action Handbook: A Visual Guide to 100 Climate Solutions for Everyone. In addition to directing the Climate Adaptation Partnership, Heidi is an Associate Professor of Climate Science and Extension Specialist at the University of Minnesota, and an Affiliate Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington.
