Peatlands, like those in Northern Minnesota, store carbon in their boggy subsurface. But a warmer world might lead to faster decomposition. In a simulated warming experiment at Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE), researchers observed increases in carbon dioxide and methane released from the peatlands, greenhouse gases that exacerbate warming.
