Nitrogen, added to soil by manure, fertilizer, or compost, can be lost to the atmosphere as ammonia gas. When Melissa Wilson joined the SWAC faculty, she noticed that different labs were measuring ammonia loss from the soil with different samplers. LAAS graduate students Jonathan Alexander and Jared Spackman decided to test the efficiency of each system; their experiment was published earlier this month , and they recommend one design for its practicality in the field and lab. “This study was outside of our grad work, but we saw an opportunity to answer a question that we were both curious about with a small and relatively easy experimental design,” says Alexander. Read the full article
