Prior to European settlement, a third of the Minnesota landscape was tallgrass prairie; less than 1% remains today. SWAC faculty member Jeffrey Strock and his co-authors were able to directly measure the changes in soil properties–physical, hydraulic, and chemical–after conversion of prairie grassland to cultivated cropland. The results of this study highlight how quickly and dramatically soil properties can change. Read the recent publication in Agronomy Journal.
