Envisioning the manureshed

Large scale, specialized farming offers efficiency and productivity, but can geographically separate animals that produce manure and croplands that could benefit from its nutrients. SWAC faculty member John Baker and his coauthors offer “manuresheds” as a system-level strategy for recovering manure's fertilizer value. Manuresheds can range in size from a single farm, to a large region of the United States. Read the recent publication in the Journal of Environmental Quality.
