Black soilship

Just 1.4% of farmers in the US are Black, a number that has been eroded by discriminatory practices for more than a century. LAAS graduate student Tiffany LaShae is documenting the relationships of Black farmers to the rich soil of the southern US. She recently published a guide to “Black soilship” in the Black Belt region, a document that blends soil science with oral history: “Black farmers are here, forging forward with resilience and creativity.” Read the full story via SPARK, an e-zine that amplifies the research, experiences, and voices of BIPOC graduate researchers.
