Katsutoshi Mizuta

Katsutoshi Mizuta's research is interdisciplinary interfacing agronomy, soil science, environmental science, economics, statistics, and geoscience (GIS).

Katsutoshi has been working as a postdoc with Dr. Yuxin Miao, since February 2021, on various collaborative projects. Those include but are not limited to:

1. development of precision nitrogen management (PNM) using calibration strip techniques for corn;
2. PNM development using remote sensing and machine learning techniques for corn;
3. open-source PNM tool development;
4. economic/environmental assessment of PNM technologies for corn
5. potato yield mapping using PlanetScope satellite data and on-the-go sensing technologies; and
6. variable rate seeding, pesticide, and sulfur application rates for corn.

Before Katsutoshi came to the U.S., he had mainly conducted research projects of soil chemistry and physics during his bachelor including:

1. examination of the spatial distribution of radionuclides released from the nuclear power plant destroyed by tsunami in Japan;
2. study of nutrient availability as related to marine plankton biomass;
3. investigation of nutrient requirements for biofuel plant (Jatropha curcas); and
4. evaluation of soil aggregate formation and stability.

In Katsutoshi's master's thesis and PhD dissertation, he aimed to develop new soil indices to serve as indicators for soil quality, health and security using the econometric methods. This research advances our understanding how climate, land use/land cover, and soil hydrology interrelate with soil carbon efficiency and the net primary productivity of a landscape. BIGDATA analysis, geoscience technologies, machine learning and econometric methods are part of this research to address soil degradation.
